MATAPU SPORTS.
AN INTERESTING GATHERING. The Matapu committee held their annual sports yesterday in Mr. W. McL. Dowie’s grounds. The sports started at 11 a.m. and were finished at 4 p.m., during which time there was not one dull moment, and all the events were carried out without a hitch. The secretary (Mr. S. Thomas) and his energetic committee are to be congratulated on the results of their efforts. The weather was dull. Mrs. T. Bevin, of Kaponga, carried out the catering in her usual liberal manner. Single Ladies’ Race.—Miss I. Lindsay 1, Miss M. Duggan 2, Miss H. Duggan 3. The committeemen’s race resulted in a dead-heat between N. Swindlehurst and L. Preece. In the run-off L. Preece won. A seven-aside football match between Okaiawa and Matapu was won by Okaiawa by 19 points to 6. The Matapu boys were not outclassed, as the scores would indicate, as several of their players showed considerable promise. Mr. J. Johnson refereed.
