TARATA SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The annual sports meeting under the auspices of the Tarata Athletic Club was held on the Tarata Domain yesterday, a good crowd of sporting enthusiasts, local residents, and visitors being present. The domain is a beautiful spot, snuggling in a bend of the Waitara river and surrounded by high hills and picturesque shelter trees. The ground lends itself remarkably to development, and even in its present state it is one of the beauty snots of the district. Although the weather yesterday was not all that might have been desired, the threatening rain held off, and a most enjoyable day’s sport was carried through. Great interest centred round the chopping and sawing events with large entries in each, and d variety of other sport was also provided, including horse leaping competitions, wrestling on horseback, running, and the inevitable greasy pig —in this case a genuine “Captain Cook” rounded up from the bush. Refreshments were provided by the ladies of the district in a marquee on the grounds, and no effort was spared to cater for the amusement and comfort of patrons. Following > are the results of the earlier events CHOPPING AND SAWING. 12-inch Maiden Chop,—First heat: A. Smith (Msec) 1, J. Payne (12sec) 2, J. Burkhardt (12sec) 3. Second heat: E.
