PRICE OF TIMBER.
BIG STOCKS AT MILLS. NO DEMAND TILL SPRING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. “Building timber will never be cheaper than it is now,” stated tne Director of Forestry (Mr. L. Mclntosh Ellis) in the course of an interview. “Now is the time £pr the home-builder to get busy, for with a slackening demand from Australia stocks are piling up at the mills. On the west coast of the South Island millions of feet of choice rimu, totara and beech are in stock ready for the market, and prices are down to bedrock.” With the advent of spring, however, these choice, seasoned stocks will be purchased, and with the resultant quickened demand prices are certain to harden. The Forest Service is looking forward to a greatly increased demand, for timber products with the coming of spring. The service is planning on n wide demand (from farmers and settlers for forest tree seedlings from the South Island State nurseries at Tapanui and Hanmer Springs.
