A MUSICAL SURPRISE.

AX AUSTRALIAN BASS By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, May 31. Dame Melba gave an audience to a local bass, Mr.' Alfred Benham, whom the diva considers will become worldrenowned if trained in Europe. The Herald, commenting, says that Dame Melba’s find is a surprise to musical connoisseurs, who were aware of Mr. Benham’s fine voice, but were always dissatisfied with its roughness of production. Dame Melba contends that European studies would result in giving the necessary polish for entry in the opera. Mr. Benham is an employee of the electric light department of the City Council, and has figured on Sydney concert platforms and with the Royal Philharmonic Society for several years.
