SQae of forgery which occurred nea.iy 22 years ago, and which was only recently discovered, came before the Magistrate’s Court to-day. VV illiam Withers, a middle-aged man, was charged on the information of the Inspector of Machinery with having committed forgery on October 6, 1900, by altering a duplicate engine-driver’s certificate by substituting his own name for that of another. Accused pleaded guilty and. was committed for sentence. CHARGES OF BURGLARY. Wellington, May 31. Alexander Gemmell, aged 21, who was discovered on the roof of George J?’owlds’ premises on ’Saturday night, appeared in the Police Court to-day to answer 27 charges of breaking, entering and theft. According to police evidence Gemmell, when arrested, said “The game is up.” He also sadd that he was responsible for many other burglaries in the city, and that he intended to clear the matter up. He was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. ■DEVON’S BUNKERS EMPTIED. Christchurch, May 31. In connection with the fire in the Devons bunkers it was reported this morning by the vessel’s agent that zhe bunkers had been emptied and, after examination of the hold, fresh bunkers would be loaded. A QUESTION OF HOSPITAL SUBSIDY. Christchurch, May 31. A deputation urged on the Prime Minister the claims of Dunedin Hospital as a base hospital and owing to the expenses incurred in running the teaching departments, they asked that, at' the least the hospital in Dunedin should receive oneeightieth part of the subsidy granted by the Government on the levies of all contributing bodies in the Dominions, this sum being £5OOO, as recommended by the Hospital Commission; also that a special grant be made jointly, through the Education Department, towards the special expenses incurred for the medical school curriculum. Mr. Massey said the request involved the redistribution of the grant, and was a matter for Cabinet and the department heads.’ He would investigate it before the House met.
