TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

NEW PLYMOUTH CUT OUT. TO BE HELD AT HASTINGS. Owing to the inability of the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association to commence the New Zealand lawn tennis championship meeting before December 23, the Management Committee of the New Zealand Lawo, Tennis Association at its quarterly meeting on Monday night decided to rescind the previous motion allotting the championships to Taranaki. Mr. A. G. Henderson, in moving to this ettect, said that the principal reason for the change of venue was owing to the Taranaki races there would bt no accommodation available in New Plymouth if the tennis championships were held there, beginning on Boxing Day. Mr. J. L. Lord said that, as proposer of the motion that the championships should be held at New Plymouth this year, he felt rather sore on the matter. The Taranaki Association had treated its delegates very shabbily, and he did not see how under the conditions New Plymouth could be given the championships this year. Mr. M. E. Denniston said he had warned the Taranaki Association that if they changed the dates of the meeting he could not support them, and had even gone so far as to place his resignation as delegate in their hands. He could not see how the New Zealand Association would be justified in giving the meeting to Taranaki unless it were started on December 26. Mr. E. Salmond said that Taranaki had made application for the championship tournament in Christmas week, and had not been guilty of any breach of faith.

The chairman said that the rule in the past had been that the championship tournament should start on Boxing Day. The convenience of the players was of paramount importance, and so many, players were now entering that the tournament would take at least a week. The Taranaki Association was departing from the rule followed in the past. Mr. G. N. Goldie said that the Taranaki Association were practically asking the New Zealand Association to run a championship tournament when no accomodation was available. Mr. Henderson’s motion that the decision to hold the championship meeting at New Plymouth be rescinded was carried. Mr. G. N. Goldie then moved, and Mr. F. Grady seconded, that the Hastings Ae • social ion be offered the championship, meeting. The motion was carried by a large majority.—Dominion.
