BRITISH SUGAR DUTIES.
MORE PREFERENCE WANTED. London, May 13. Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, and the colonies were represented on a powerful deputation of Empire sugar producers, which waited on Mr. E. L. Wood, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, and stressed the necessity of increasing the Imperial preference on sugar. Mr. Wood said that he recognised the strength of the deputation’s arguments, and detailed the Chancellor’s present difficulties. He pointed out that by not reducing the gross duty the Government had already granted a valuable concession to colonial producers.
