WAR MEMORIAL.
THE QUESTION OF BOROUGH COUNCIL’S DECISION. At an emergency meeting of the New! Plymouth Borough Council on Monday night to discuss a matter of urgent importance to the town —and at present confidential—the opportunity was token of dealing with the question of the site for the war memorial. A deputation, organised by the War Memorial Committee recently waited on the council asking that the council should take steps to have the piece of land opposite the rail* way station set aside as a site for the erection of the cenotaph which it ham been decided shall be built as a war memorial ror New Plymouth. After discussing the position in the? light of legal opinion given the council as to the purpose of the trust attaching to the land, the following resolution, moved by the Mayor and seconded bjj Councillor J. Brown, was carried unani< mously:—t “That the deputation, be informed that the council has 'been advised that legislation is required before its request can be acceded to, and that the council feels that it is not justified in seeking legislation to do a way with the trust, attaching to the • land, which trust has been imposed A, by Parliament at the insistence of previous Council.”
