THE BASIC WAGE.

AUSTRALIA’S PROBLEM. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Sydney, May 20. < An interesting position has arisen as the result of the appeal to the Fullfi Court, challenging the authority of the. Board of Tri’de to issue more than one declaration in the year. The previous Government sought legal advice on ths same point when refusing to Gazette the previous declaration. It was ascertained that the only procedure would be to contest the application for a new rate. The Bread Carters’ Union appealed against the board’s declaration, which was referred to the Full Court by Judge Rolin. If the appeal ie upheld the Govern* ment will be obliged to amend the widening the powers of the board, but this would be against Sir George Fuller’s pre-election promise that there should be no reduction of wages except decreases granted in the' ordinary course. Various branches of the baking trade are holding a mass meeting on Sunday, with the view of deciding what action is to be taken in the event of wages being decreased. The Amalgamated Engineering Union (railway and tramway section) is convening a meeting to consider the High Court’s decision that the commissioners are not bound by the Federal award to engineering, granting essential increases of wages.
