THE COAL INDUSTRY.
RECOVERING IN BRITAIN. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 19, 5.5 p.m. London, May IS. Mr. W. C. Bridgeman (Secretary for Mines), in presenting the Mines Estimates in the House of Commons, said the outlook for metalliferous mines was most gloomy, but for the coal-mines most hopeful. The coal exports to every country outside Europe during the first quarter of 1922 exceeded the 1913 figures, and to Western Europe they were only 6 per cent, below the figures for 1913. Fewer men were now employed, but the output per capita was much higher. Despite the seven-hour day, industry was ready to take advantage of any general trade recovery.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
