Advice has just been received that the Australians are to arrive at New Plymoutn on Monday, June 26, and will stay at the Imperial Hotel until Thursday morning. It is. expected that the sporting public will turn up at the station to give the visitors from our sister Dominion a hearty welcome. The Taranaki sports people have got a reputation for the way they entertain their visitors, sc it is hoped that the public will rally round the “Soccer” Club, which is still in its infancy, so that that reputation will be upheld. Mr. L. C. H. Dawson, of Messrs. Burgess, Fraser and Co., Ltd., or Mr. W. Johnston, of Stainton’s garage, will- be pleased to hear from any persons willing to assist in entertaining the visitors in any way at all. The Australian party consists as follows: Goal.—G. Cartwright (New South Wales). Backs.—Right, A. Fisher (New South Wales) captain, D. Cumberford (New South Wales); left, G. Harris (Queensland). Half-backs.—Right, R. Henderson (New South Wales) ; centre, J. Publes (Queensland) ; left, P. Doyle (New South Wales), A. Gibb (Queensland) vice-captain. Forwards.—Outside right, W. Dane (New South Wales) ; inside right, W. Brattan (Queensland), D. Ward (New South Wales) ; centre, W. Maunder (New South Wales), G. W. Brown (Queensland) ; inside left, J. Cumberford (Queensland) ; outside left, T. Thompson (New South Wales). The manager is Mr. A. Morgan (Queensland) and Mr. P. Doyle (New South Wales) is assistant manager. A critique of the team will be published in a few days. The tour opens at Wanganui on May 27, and then after playing at Wellington, the Australians tour the South Island before coming to New Plymouth. THE GAME IN TARANAKI. *‘A Spectator” writes: “Regarding your report of the Association match which took place last Saturday in New Plymouth, will you kindly permit me to make a few comments on the game? Having had the advantage of both playing in, and seeing some of the world’s nest games, I—knowing the short time tie game liar been in progress in Taranaki—considered it to be a very satisfactory display, and the report which appeared in your paper to be. grossly unfair. May I add, also, that your reporter may have seen scientific gaimes played, but his report undoubtedly showed a decided lack of knowledge of the fine points of this sport, being especially noticeable in his disparagement of the play of the half-backs. In my opinion this section of the team did very good work, special mention being due to the breaking up tactics of tie Hawera centre
half, and the kicking and placing of the New Plymouth right half compared very favorably with the immortal "Sunny Jim Sommers,” of Glasgow Celtic, well known to every enthusiastic "Soccer” player. I also wish to refer to the New Plymouth centre forward, whose only weakness was to retain the ball, which appears, to a spectator, rather selfish. This being rectified, he should prove a very successful player. I firmly believe that with practice and sound training, when the Taranaki team meets the Attssies on Juno 28 in the New Plymouth park, the football reputation of the Taranakites will still be upheld. [The report was written by one who has played "Soccer” in England, and whose Imowiedge of the game is very extensive. "A Spectator’s” belief "that with practice and sound training” the Taranaki men will improve confirms our reporter’s views, whose criticism aimed at producing this.—Ed.J
