KAPONGA TOWN (BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.)' A meeting of the Kaponga Town Board was held on Tuesday, loth instant. Present: Commissioners Cook (chairman), Allen, Betts, Guy, Law and Shepherd. Leave of absence was granted to Commissioner Briggs (on account of illness) until September. It was reported that the old iron from the recent fire had been sold for £l. Engineer’s Report.—ln his report, Mr. Moss stated ftiat electric light poles had been erected down the Lower Palmer Road, and that the wiring on the Duthie Road section had been commenced. The two electric plants had been running on parallel during the month. The new plant is now being called upon to do all the work, pending the overhaulage of the old plant. During the month five new connections had been added. Foreman’s Report.—The foreman reported that Kaponga Street had been metalled to give a clean entrance to the Convent School. A new drainage connection had been made. It was decided to gravel (half-width) the footpath on the west side of the Upper Manaia Road, and also that on the lower side of Kwi Street. A notice-board is to be erected on the western stock road closing this street against wheeled traffic. Application was received from the football and hockey clubs, asking for a reduction in the hall hire for bi-weekly dances. A concession of 10s per night was made, on condition that an outside engagement should take precedence. Mr. J. Tattersail’s tender of £5 was accepted for painting the outside of the pavilion at the park. The men’s hockey club was granted the use of the -Domain on the 18th and 2&th instants, and on the Sth and 15th of June, for matches with Eltham, Stratford, Hawera and Manaia, respectively. The ladies’ Star dub applied for the use of the hockey ground. This was granted, subject to the fixtures not clashing with those of other chibs. The lessee of the Park and Domain was granted a reduction of 10s per acre rental. Cemetery charges were amended as follow: Interments—week-days £l, Sundays 30s. The price for plots was raised to 30s. It was decided that the Cemetery Board would keep plots in order for the sum of 10s per annum. RIFLE CLUB. The annual meeting of the Kaponga Defence Rifle Club was held in the public library on Tuesday, 15th instant. Present: Messrs. Geo. Smith (chairman), Harrison (3), A. H. Guy, Uttinger, Zimmerman, Schumaker, and Elgar. The minutes of the previous annual meting were read and confirmed, and the balance sheet, showing a credit of £8 18s Bd, was adopted. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, Mr. Geo. Smith; vice-president. Mr. A. H. Guy; secretary, Mr. A. R. Elgar. The executive will consist of the president, vicepresident. secretary, and Messrs. J. Guy, and Schumaker. The selection and handicapping committee comprises the president, secretary and Mr. >S. Holland. Mr. Fearon was appointed auditor, and the subscription was fixed as for last year, viz., 10s 6d. In connection with the championship cup competitions, it was decided —(1) that only short ranges be fired, three shoots, and all to count; (2) that the first cup competition be held on Thursday, May 18. The secretary was instructed to write to the Hawera Club applying for transfers for Messrs. G. and L. Harrison to the Kaponga Club.
To raise funds, the committee of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Cliurch decided upon a concert to be held in the Town Hall on Friday next. Straight-out concerts in Kaponga are of rare occurrence, and lovers of good vocal music will welcome the change from the somewhat hackneyed social and dance. A glance at the names of the performres—Mrs. J. P. Murphy, Mrs. B. Cleland, Messrs. Mowat and Hamilton, and from Hawera, Messrs. Ackroyd, Lamb, Renwick and p ar ty—j a a sufficient guarantee as, to the quality of the fare to be offered. Variety will be added to the programme by the introduction of Highland dances (Misses Mowat), while the humorous portion will be in the capable hands of Mr. Jock Hamilton, who will bring “Sir Harry Lauder” to the local platform.
