Farmers’ union meeting. Wanganui, May 17. Business at the Farmers’ Conference this morning comprised the hearing of an address by Mr. Polson, New Zealand president, similar to that delivered in the Wairarapa a fortnight ago. The conference also discussed a remit whether Manawatu and Wanganui sub-provincial unions should Be given provincial status. A motion in favor of this change was carried by 21 votes to 13. NO RETRENCHMENT FOR SCHOOLS. Wellington, May 17. ‘‘Spare the schools in any scheme of national economy,” was the burden of the appeal which the teachers have made to school committees all over the Dominion, and which they repeated ar the annual conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute to-day in the form of a motion. The president of the Institute, Mr. J. E. Purchas. of Christchurch, said the motion was in no way a reflection on the Government, but rather an appeal to the public to see that the schools were left alone in the movement for retrenchment. The motion was seconded by Mr. D. W. Low (Palmerston North) and carried. SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ CONFERENCE. Wellington, May 17. The annual meeting of the Secondary Schools Principals’ Association is being held The following were nominated for office in the Secondary Schools’ Association, which meets tomorrow: President, T. R. Cresswell (Wellington College); members of executive, Miss C. M. Cruickshank (Wanganui Girls’ High School), W. A. Armour (Napier Boys’ High School), and W. W. Thomas (Timaru Boys’ High School). The conference is now in committee. The annual meeting commences to-morrow. BURGLARS AT TAUMARUNUI. Taumarunui, May 16. Burglars entered the premises of the Taumarunui Hardware Company and the shop of M. Robson, tobacconist, last night, or early this morning. Goods, including knives, electric torches, guns and a large quantity of ammunition, to the value of £4O, were stolen from the hardware premises, and a small amount of cash, tobacco and pipes stolen from the tobacconist. THE MINERS’ FEDERATION. Wellington, Last Night. The annual conference of delegates of the Miners’ Federation will be held at Wellington in July. It is reported that a proposal for the reconstruction of the federation will be discussed by the conference.
