Sitting in banco the Supreme Court refused an application on behalf of the two French prisoners for a rule nisi for a writ of Habeas Corpus on the ground that there was no illegal detention. PROPOSED ROYAL COMMISSION. Sydney, May 17. Sir (Sorge Fuller, referring to the recent reiterated request by the City Council for a Royal Commission to inquire into civic affairs, states that it is impracticable to appoint one for an inquiry into the whole period of seventeen years, but he will acquiesce if a specific period is stated. LABOR VENDETTA. Melbourne, May 17. Mr. Charlton has been re-appointed leader of the Labor Party. It is understood the party is prepared to sup•port Mr. Watt, or any other section of the House which will overthrow Mr. Hughes.
