(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Returned Soldiers’ Ball on Wed- ' nesday evening was a very successful and enjoyable one. The music was supplied by Mr. P. Parker’s orchestra. The stage and supper room were nicely decorated by Mrs. P. Holmes, assisted by a number of other ladies. The secretary of the R.S.A. (Mr. Peat) organised the annual re-union. Messrs. J. Munro, M. : Fennell, H. Young and D. Trotter were j masters of ceremonies. | Mr. A. J. Glasson, of the Agricultural i Department (at the invitation of the Pi--1 liama Farmers’ Union) judged the root ' crop competition at Pihama. The results are:—Boys’ and Girls’ Club: Mangolds: D. Pettigrew, 210 points; H. Pettigrew, 18S| points. Members of the ' Farmers’ Union, mangolds: Alex. Pettigrew 128, J. Pettigrew 107, D. Holmes junr. 92; swedes. C. Horgan 814, J. D. j Conaglen 794. Half-acre and under (mangolds): W. Harris 184, J. A. Stevenson 169. During the afternoon Mr. Glasson gave a short and interesting address on growing root crops. Tenders for the erection of a new Convent School are being called by Mr. Healy. The building is to be in con- '■ crete. The Egmont Open Coursing Chib has I decided to continue. At the annual j meeting on Saturday night a motion j was proposed to wind up the club ow- ■ ing to the lack of coursing enthusiasts. The motion was defeated. Financially . the club is in a strong position, having a credit balance of £44. Mr. C. Wool- ' ford was re-elected president and chair- ; man of the committee, and Mr. M. B. I Doolaghty secretary. It was arranged I to course, the Booker Cup on June 3, at ; Bayley Road. The first prize will be ' £lO, second £4, two dogs £1 each. On ■ Friday evening a delegation from the! New Plymouth Coursing Club met the Onunake Club committee and discussed joint co-operation regarding financing a Plumpton meeting. On Friday afternoon a youth named i Ernie Briscoe had a misadventure ' whilst handling and generating car- ' bide gRs. spontaneous combustion ensuing. The lad, who was severely 1 burnt, was attended to by Dr. Watts.
