ELTHAM.
MAGISTRATE’S COURT, (From Our Own Correspondent.) May 15. A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at Eltham to-day, before Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M. A. C. Gower, charged by the police, on behalf of the Railway Department, with allowing a cow to trespass on a railway level crossing, was convicted and fined 10s and costs 7s. Charles Edward Frederickson, for riding a motor-cycle on the wrong side of the traffic dome in High Street, was convicted and fined £1 and costs 7s. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended cases: Percy William Allen v. M. E. Henderson, £55 13s 5d (costs £4 Ils 6d) ; C. A. Wilkinson, Ltd., v. Abbott and Coleman, £l3 2s 3d (costs £2 19s). CHARGE OF ASSAULT. f Duncan McNab, an elderly man, was charged with assaulting and doing actual bodily harm to Stephen Dane at Eltham on Saturday last. Constable Townsend, in applying for a remand for seven days, said that Dane was at present in the Hawera Hospital, and further developments might follow. He would not oppose Mr. A. Chrystal’s application for bail, although he would ask that bail, if allowed, should be substantial, as accused had no stake in Eltham, and had been arrested at the Strafford railway station in the act of leaving for Te Wera. A remand until May 22 was granted, bail being allowed in self of £lOO and one surety of £2OO or two of £lOO each. Dane is at present in the Hawera Hospital, suffering from concussion of the brain, and his condition is reported to be fairly serious. McNab’s arrest was effected on Saturday night by Constable Gill, of Stratford.
