ENEMY OF SOCIETY.
DEFIANT TRAIN BANDIT. Paris, April 29. The bandit Chartier, a medical student, who-was arrested in July last in connection with a sensational robbery from passengers on the Paris-Marseilles express, has been condemned to death on a charge of murdering a French subaltern who resisted the bandit. While arresting Chartier in a cafe in the Avenue Wagram, the police watched two other men in the safe, both of whom fled when they saw Chartier in custody. They fired at the police as they ran, wounding one constable critically The police returned the fire and shot both men dead. Chartier confessed that he had participated in the robbery from the train, but denied that he was responsible for the murder of the French subaltern. He is a fair-haired, fragile-looking youth, of Polish origin, who professes to be an anarchist. Just before the jury retired to consider its verdict he rose, pale of face, and said hoarsely: “My hatred against society is as deep as ever. You will only extinguish it with my life. I defy you to take my head.” He has refused to sign, an appeal.
