FATAL COLLISION.
RAILWAY CROSSING ACCIDENT. By Telegraph.—Press Apsociation. Dannevirke, May 12. A collision occurred at the Allardice Street railway crossing between 5.30 and 6 p.m. this evening, between a train and a motor lorry, and resulted in the death of a man named Jimmy O’Brien, presumed to be between 45 and 50 years of age. Deceased had one leg, the left one having been previously amputated above the knee. The lorry, which was owned and driven by G. H. Mackay, a butcher, of Terehunga, was returning to that place from Dannevirke when the mishap occurred. O’Brien was riding on the lorry. The driver did not see the train, which struck the lorry in the fore part, carrying it over the cattle stop. Mackay was thrown on the cowcatcher and carried 50 yards, but got off unhurt when the train stopped. O’Brien was thrown on the rails and dragged some distance. His head was much mutilated, and when picked up he was dead. His relatives are unknown.
