FIGHTING THE PLAGUE.

NEW SERUM FOUND. AUTHORITIES REFUSE ITS USE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, May 13. The Daily Telegraph draws attention to the fact that the new anti-plague serum discovered, by a young Sydney doctor is being used in Sydney, and is proving a powerful weapon against the scourge, yet the Federal authorities and the Queensland Government, acting under Federal advice, refuse to use it.

The Telegraph points out that out of 31 cases in Sydney seven have died. Two of these were not treated with the new serum, and only two of the others died after having been properly treated. One of these was a man of 85; whereas in Queensland, where the new serum was not employed, 64 out of 115 plague patients died.

Though the discoverer does not claim the serum is a cure for plague, the patients treated so far being too few for a definite conclusion, the Telegraph contends that larger experience might prove that a cure for the dreaded disease has at last been discovered. ANOTHER DEATH. Sydney, May 12. There has been another death from plague at the hospital. CLEAN-UP DAY. Sydney, May 13. A “clean up the city” campaign opens to-day. Addresses will be delivered urging on citizens the necessity for a weekend clean-up of all refuse and garbage, so as to di'scourage rats. A SUSPECTED RAT. Perth, May 13. Examination of the dead rat on the Dimboola suggested no evidence of plague. The vessel has returned to the wharf and is loading for the East.
