LOWER WAGES.
UNIONS ISSUE A PROTEST. MOVE TO REGPEN CASE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Following is a summary of a statement issued by the Wellington trades unions on the bonus question:—“lf the award rates did not keep pace with prices on the up grade, as admitted by the Court, the reduction represents a movement of prices on the down grade, and the logical sequence is that the purchasing power of wages is below the 1® 14k standard.” After deaJing with the terms in the pronouncement of a fair standard of living and the bare living wage, the statement says: “The total adult wage workers in the Dominion is 70,000 under
awards, not 375,000, as the Court assumed. The effect of the reduction willj be approximately £1,000,000 taken outf of the pockets of the workers annually. The Court’s decision is so inequitable that the unions are recommended to taka steps to have the case reopened at the earliest opportunity. ’
