BIG SHIPS COMING.
WITH CARGO AND TO LOAD. ACTIVITY AT NEW PLYMOUTH. After a lull of some .weeks in overseas shipping at the port of New Plymouth, the. liner City of Winchester arrived early yesterday afternoon for Homeward loading. The City of Winchester is a vessel of 7981 tons, and on being berthed was drawing 19 ft. 3 in. aft. Loading operations were commenced shortly after three o’clock yesterday afternoon. Overseas shipping at New Plymouth promises to be brisk during the next few weeksj. The City of Winchester will, it is thought, be in port till Wednesday at least. The Makalla (6781 tons) is to leave Wellington for New Plymouth on Monday afternoon, arriving here the following day, so will have to anchor in tne stream pending the departure of the ( itv of Winchester. The Makalla has direct cargo from England to discharge, and later proceeds to Nelson and Wanganui, to commence Homeward loading. Another early arrival is the Wairuna, from Pacific ports, at present at Auckland, which is due at New Plymouth on May 19. The C. and D. liner Port Victor follows, about May 27, whilst the intercolonial steamer Kaitoke is expected from Newcastle towards the end of the month, with 700 tons of sleepers and 100 tons of coal for cue Government. The Canadian Constructor, which left New York on February 28 for Australian and New Zealand ports, is due at New Plymouth early next month. Other vessels announced to visit here shortly are the Canadian Seigneur and the Tredenham, but the dates of their arrival are as vet indefinite Yesterday the C. and D liner Port Chalmers was announced to load for Home at New Plymouth about the middle of July. She will -ift 17/KXI freight careaeea from this port.
