MORE WAGES DEMAND.

THE TYPOGRAPHICAL union. NO AGREEMENT REACHED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, May 11. The Conciliation Commissioner is engaged in hearing a case in which the Wellington Newspaper Proprietors’ Association cite the Wellington Typographical Union. The proprietors propose that the hours of work for day or night operators be 45, compositors 48, and offer as rates of pay for linotype, intertype and linograph operators, first division 2s per hour, second division Is lid per hour; monotype operators, Is lid and Is 10d; other operators, Is lOd and Is M. The present wages are £5 9s by day and £5 13s at night. For piece operators it is sought to reduce rates by halfpenny per 1000 ens. Compositors receive £4 19s by day and £5 4s 3d at night. The employers propose the following hourly rates: First division Is Bd, second Is 7d, third Is sd; and ask that payment for holidays be abolished and that double hourly rates be paid for Sundays, Christmas Day and Good Friday.

In counter-claims, the union asks for: Wages for operators, £6 15s by day and £7 15s at night, casuals 4s per hour by day, 5s at night; 40-hour week for day workers, 38 for the night; compositors, £6 10s by day and £7 10s at night; casuals 27s fid per day; double time for Christmas Day, Good Friday, Anzac Day and Labor Day, and time and a half on other holidays. Wellington, Last Night.

the Typographical Union’s dispute was before the Conciliation Council today. Consideration of the related trades dispute was adjourned till June 1. Mr. Pirani briefly outlined the demands of the employers, contending that they were fair and equitable. Clause 1 (that payment for work shall be either by time or by piecework) was agreed to.

Considerable discussion followed on the, wages question, both on the proposals and the counter-proposals regarding the weekly wage and piecework. Mr. Earle pointed out that the employees’ union wanted an increase on the existing award and the employers wanted less. There was no possibility of uie employers agreeing to anything more than the existing award. In view of the contention of the other side, the question of wages must, he* thought, go to the Court.

No agreement could be come to on the question of wages, and the council proceeded to consider other points in the demand, and adjourned until to-morrow.
