Christchurch, Last Night. “I could make some very depressing statements concerning the state of affairs in certain districts in the matter of raffles to raise money for church purposes. When we stand alone on the subject we are scoffed at because of our so-called narrowmindedness, but we should not trouble whether we are surrounded by other churches that have very little conscience on this question.” In these words the moderator of the Uhristtnurcn rresbytery (Rev. T. G. Butler) opened an attack at a meeting to-day on a movement m some churches to raise money by means of raffles, guessing and such like attractions. After considerable discussion the Presbytery carried the following motion unanimously: “That the special attention of congregations be drawn to clause 6 of the session’s life and work committee’s report, which reads: ‘That special instruction regarding the evils of gambling be taught in Sunday schools and churches.’*
