The withdrawals totalled £39,230 13s, being £ 12,980 12s in excess of last year. The deposits for tie year were £lB,237 13s in excess of the withdrawals, and show an increase of £32,227 14s 2d -over last year. The increase had been brought about by having more centrally situated and modern offices, which have been secured in the New Zealand Insurance Company’s buildings, and by the amendment made in tie Savings Bank Act, which' now allows interest to be paid on sums up to £2OO, wcereas interest j was only paid up to £lOO previously. (Hamilton) report:— Beef.—Although there has not been a marked advance in value considerable quantities of beef for export have been disposed of during the • past fortnight. The effect on the local market ’ has not so far been felt. Eighteen shillings to 19s per 100 lbs. is roughly the basis of purMutton. —Values are still advancing without any prospect of check. Wethers are extremely scarce and eagerly competed for when offered. Fat lambs also are keenly sought after and difficult to procure. Freezing operations have practically ceased. Store Cattle.—[The movement in beef has not been without effect on the store market, and competition seems somewhat brighter all round. There is an enquiry for grown steers, but this may not last long. Eighteen-month steers, which were very brisk a fortnight ago, have eased in value, although the demand is still fairly ’ strong. Calf heifers meet with good competition in all markets, and many good sales have
prominence. Eighteen-months empty heifers are being sought after, but supplies in t'lia locality are limited.
Store Sheep.—Supplies In al! centres are short, indeed it is difficult to discover where the sheep of the country are secreted. No doubt, with the rapid advance that is taking place, holders will, before long, be tempted to market. Those who wish to sell before winter might do well to consider the advisability of offering now whilst feed is still plentiful. Pigs have eased somewhat lately, due, no doubt, to the heavy supplies on hand. Baconers and porkers work out at about 5%d at the yards. Young pigs are subject to fluctuation, but in general meet with fair competition. Horses have shown no improvement since our last report. The yardlngs have not been so large as at this season last year.
