fc .. SOUTHERN MARKETS. By Telegraph:—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The most notable movement in the grain and produce trade is in the cocksfoot market, although it is the off season. Sharp inquiry Jias arisen, and a very fair amount of business in. dressed seed has taken place between merchants at up to 8*46 per lb, equal to about 5%d for farmers’ seed undressed. Oats are sagging. ’Both A and B are distinctly weaker, notably B, and plenty has been offering at 2s lOd f.0.b., sacks in, the equivalent at wayside sttftions being from 2s 2d to 2s 3d. One of the causes of the drop for B is, as forecasted some time ago as likely to develop, the big proportion of discolored oats which the bad harvest weather has produced in the South. A contributory cause of the easing for A's Is that early speculators for the Australian market are now selling back as a result of rains over the Tasman improving the* feed position. Though perhaps not great in the aggregate, this early buying is enough when it comes back to embarrass a market that has not been in robust health for some time. A gartons may be quoted to 2s 6d to 2s 7<i.
Potatoes are weaker. It is considered the shipments going north this week will suffice for the Auckland market for the month. This scarcely helps the prospects of a recovery. The price may be quoted at £3 to £3 2s Gd at wayside stations.
Peas still maintain a firm demand, and a good deal of business on a basis of 7s 9d to 8s to farmers has been done. Cowgrass is not likely to yield as prolifically as has been reported. Values are unaltered., -LONDON WOOL SALES, j RATES MAINTAINED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 9, 5.5 p.m. London, May 8.
