NAPIER TRAMWAYS.
A HEATED DEBATE. MANAGER AND ENGINEER DISMISSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, May 9. There was a large attendance of the public at last night’s meeting of the City Council, which heatedly debated the sub-committee’s proposals concerning the control of the tramway and electrical departments, it being eventually decided to dismiss eight officers, including the tramway manager and electrical engineer, on the grounds of economy, the town clerk to act as manager of these departments with an additional £l5O salary. Councillor W. E. Hill resigned as the result of the decision, and the Mayor (Mr. Andrew) offered to re-contest the Mayoralty if challenged. • Those favoring the drastic proposals carried the day, the Mayor and three other councillors opposing. Public indignation has been aroused and an indignation meeting is being held. The crowd attending the council meeting frequently interrupted and the Mayor threatened to clear the building if they did not cease. Three policemen assisted in maintaining order. There is talk of further resignations of councillors.
