FIGHT TO RETAIN WAGES. STRIKE IN MELBOURNE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 9, 11.10 p.m. Melbourne, May 9. The first blow in the struggle by the unions against the proposed wage reductions was struck by 500 members of the electrical trades union ceasing work.
The Australian Workers’ Union has instructed its members not to apply for work in the country without first attending at the union’s headquarters. The Gasworkers’ Union has approached the companies for a conference.
REDUCTION OF WAGES Received May 9, 11.10 p.m. Sydney, May 9. The amalgamated engineers express strong opposition to the proposed reduction in wages. They have convened a mass meeting of the union on Saturday, to discuss the matter.
