SEARCH FOR OIL.
A SURVEY IN NEW GUINEA. UNFAVOURABLE REPORT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received May 9, 7.20 p.m. . Sydney, May 9. The report of the geological experts who conducted a survey of a portion of mandated New Guinea, with a view to determining the value of reputed oil discoveries, is generally unfavourable. Over two thousand square miles were surveyed. The report states that probably small quantities of oil could be obtained, but it is doubtful if it would repay for the outlay and working costs. Therefore the experts could not recommend sinking a test well. The Federal Government favours additional surveys, and in the meantime they are refusing to grant oil leases or prospecting licenses. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
