BUTTER POSITION.
“CONSIDERABLE ACTIVITY.’ BUYERS AT Is 5Jd PER POUND. Palmerston North, May S. During the past week there has been considerable activity in the local butter market. A large quantity of butter manufactured in Palmerston North and surrounding district has been sold ex store at Is 5Jd per pound, f.o.b. Wellington. This is the highest price paid to local factories since the market rose, and equivalent to Is 7£d per lb. wholesale in England. It is understood that the butter is going to Australia, where it is in big demand at present. This is construed to mean that the Commonwealth factories have been caught with short supplies through overshipment, or that they might be faced with a shortage for winter supplies. During the past few several local factories have been approached ' with offers of Is sd, f.0.b., nearest railway station for June and July shipment, and it is probable that business may result. Most of the cheese factories have nowchanged over ,to butter.
