RACING IN ENGLAND, By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 5, 5.5 p.m. London, May 4. The King's horse Picardy, ridden by Donoghue, won the Comber’emere Handicap at Chester. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting promises fine sport at Hawera on Wednesday and Thursday next. Acceptances for the first day are very satisfactory, and more than usual interest is attached to the gathering—which marks the opening* of the steeplechase season in the Dominion. The club advertises that the issue of complimentary tickets has been reluctantly suspended, though why this reluctance the writer ■ knoweth not. Those who can afford to put ; pounds on neddies can certainly afford to pay a few shillings for the privilege. It is only j a matter of time when all clubs wilt come into line, and “complimontaries" are wiped out, and complaints of unfair distribution will be unheard of. Reduced admission fees, and special trains with excursion fares, should tempt a good crowd of sports to attend the meeting. The first race starts at 11.10 a.m. on the first day. This alteration Is necessary because of the big acceptances for the Telegraph Handicap, and the race win have to be run in two divisions. Alan McDonald has been engaged to ride Mattock in the Egmont Steeples. Jack O'Shea will be on Rational, Marble Glass, and Income in their Hawera engagements.
Gloaming has run hia last race this season, and goes into winter quarters as sound as a bell. His prospects next season should again be bright, though increasing respiratory troubles may confine his efforts to only sprint races.
The principal winning two-year-olds this season are: Epitaph £4260, Farceur £2400, Morose £1590, Mountain Lion £1520, King's Trumpeter £1290, Rapine £1195, Uncle Alex £ll4O, Ares £ll3O, Peneus £lO9B, and The Cypher £lO4O. Valerie won £690. Tatau Tatau, who has been threatening to win a race for some time, showed her best form at the South. Canterbury meeting last week, where she won the Doncaster Welter in fast time (train. 25 l-ssec. for seven furlongs), and subsequently beat all but tie speedy Songbird in the big race on the second day. The daughter of Kilbroney and Taringamutu carries the colors of Sir James Carroll.
Died recently in Auckland, “Jack" Lennard, who, for upwards of fifty years, bred and raced horses with considerable success. The present generation of sports will remember him best as the owner of Waimangu and Santa Rosa, both Auckland Cup winners, but Taranaki has to thank him for Musket Maid, the dam of Waiuku and Okoari—both of tappj’ memory.
To back the winner and yet lose money was the fate of Beauford’s backers in the All-Aged Stakes at Randwick recently, the tote percentage swallowing up so much of the capital invested (nearly all of which was on Beauford) that punters lost a shilling in the pound. It was a ridiculous position, and a bad advertisement for the machine, of which the bookmakers are sure to make the most. Jockster A. Wood put up a remarkable performance at the Australian J.C. Autumn meeting, riding in four weight-for-age races, and winning them all. In stakes he won £6935, and his winning percentage totalled £346.
There was big money to be won ai the above gathering. Mr. J. Brown took £5219 and a gold cup for Prince Charles’ victory In the Sydney Cup, and £l5O for Prince Minimbah running second in the Easter Stakes, making £5369 in all. Other big winners were: Mr. E. E. Clarke £4182. Mr. W*. H. Mackay £4021, Mr. F. G. Spurway £3950, Mrs. L. J. Thompson £3403, Mr. N. Falkiner £2989, and Mr. P. C. Nixon £2244.
Mr. E. Penman, who is transferring his horses from Bulls to Otaki next week, was tendered a surprise party consisting of a number of sports and some ladles on Thursday evening. Mr. Penman was presented with a esse of pipes, and his good wife was the recipient of a iandsome handbag. Music and song rounded off a very enjoyable even-
The Manawatu Standard has a poor sense of humor. In a recent issue was a paragraph referring to an alleged breach of the gaming regulations by a. Palmerston person, and immediately below was a propaganda advertisement inserted by those who are interested in the licensing of bookmakers on racecourses.
Rowles’ Hatch has returned Automoana and Haeretmoana to their owner, and Lady Kottrlpo is spelling. During the winter Hatch will pay more attention to riding than to training. There is more money in the former occupation, if the saddle-sitter is anyway successful.
Coalition is reported to be galloping and jumping finely at Trentham, and if not ''murdered’’ by the handicapper his reappearance may be looked for at Wanganui. Another great 'chaser, Coroglen, is reported to be lame, but he would only require to have three sound legs to beat the general run of timbertoppers up north.
Twelve horses were brought down from Auckland bj’ the Rarawa S’esterdaj’ and railed on to llawera for the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting on Wednesday and Thursday. Included in the number were Tenacious, Oakleigh, Boomerday, and Mangamahoe.
