THE SPORTS GROUND.
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. PLAYING AREA READY. A meeting of the New Plymouth Sports Ground Committee was held last night, when Mr. A. L. Humphries presided over an attendance of fourteen members, In reporting the position of the ground the chairman stated that everything that could be done at the present time had been done, and the grass was coming away well. The cost to date was £O2l, and with the sum of £250 borrowed from, the Taranaki Rugby Union the committee was in a position to meet this liability. Over 1500 yards of earth had been put on to the ground, and that had brought it up to its original level. Members considered that the position disclosed was very satisfactory. The chairman also reported that the Pukekura Park Board had given permission to cut out trees, which would effect an improvement by allowing the sun through.—Left in the hands of a sub-committee. The secretary of the New Plymouth Motor Cycle Club wrote thanking the committee for the splendid assistance rendered on the day of the motor cycle races and enclosing a donation of £2O. Mr. T. C. List also wrote expressing appreciation of the committee’s work on the sports ground, and forwarded a donation of £5 ss. It was resolved to thank the donors. The Fourth Battalion Band (Wellington Regiment) was granted permission to use the ground for marching practice for two hours one day a month. The Taranaki Rugby Union’s application. to play matches on the sports ground to-morrow was approved, and it was resolved that the committee meet and inspect the ground after the match. Steps are also to be taken to keep the playing area clear of the public. Mr. C. H. Dawson, on behalf of the New Zealand Football association, applied for the use of the ground on June 25 for the Australian-Taranaki match. —Granted subject to the usual terms. The chairman reported that arrangements were well in hand for the sevenaside tournament, which was to be held on the Recreation Grounds on June 3. The valuable shield donated to the Taranaki Rugby Union -for annual competition will be competed for on that day. It was resolved to donate seven gold medals and seven silver medals to the winners and runners-up respectively. The nomination fee will be 7s per team. Messrs. J. McLeod, A. L. Humphries, W. H. Moyes, Jas. Garcia, and G. E. Jago were appointed a sub-committee to make the necessary arrangements. Application will be made to the Railway Department for delayed trains.
