PROBATION GRANTED.

TWO TIMARU OFFENDERS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Timaru, Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day Mr. Justice Adams dealt with two offenders committed for sentence. William J. Hinks (19), for four thefts of money from letters in the postal office, was placed on probation for three years, and is to report weekly to the minister of his church (Rev. H. Goring, Baptist) instead of the probation officer. The chief postmaster (Mr. Coad) spoke highly of the youth’s conduct before these lapses. F. J. Stone, a fisherman, for setting fire to his house, was placed on probation for three years. The evidence showed he threw the bedding on the fire in a, fit of anger with his wife when intoxicated, but only the bedding was burned. A prohibition order was made a condition of his probation.
