ANGLICAN SYNOD.

THE PROHIBITION QUESTION., A CHURfCH PROBLEM. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, May 3. The Anglican General Synod heard a deputation from the New Zealand Alliance, asking for co-operation Lu the prohibition campaign. The Rev. -»ir. Dawson said the liquor problem was a church problem, and the world expected the church to solve it. Her failure would disappoint both her and her enemies. If the church failed to bring forth the best results, she was in danger of forfeiting the leadership in moral reforms. The Primate said that, so far as he knew, the General Synod had never passed any direct resolution on the subject of prohibition. Diocesan synods had expressed objection more than once to making apy decision on a question which they regarded as political. “I can assure you,” he said, “that 30 years ago there were few clergy and fewer of the laity who could have listened so patiently to what yoji have said, but, a very vast majority at this moment, if not in favour of prohibition, are in favour of a great change.” He was aware that the prohibition law could and would be defeated in certain quarters, but t'he important thing to note was that the number of sober and de-cent-living men would be vastly increased. He expressed himself as personally in favour of prohibition in New Zealand, where the geographical conditions were more favourable than in some other countries.

The Primate was thanked for his remarks.

Auckland, Last Night. The Synod carried unanimously Dr. Averill’s/motion regarding marriage. A resolution was passed paying a tribute to the late Primate and Archdeacon Harper. The military affairs committee reported that its activities were drawing to a close, being chiefly for the benefit of patients in military hospital or sanatorium. It is arranging for release from Government control to wind up its affairs.
