NLW ZEALANDERS IN SYDNEY. MISS BREWSTER PLAYING. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 2, 10.10 p.m. . Sydney, May 2. The tennis championships were continued to-day in fine and cool weather. The courts were showing signs of wear and tear, resembling chip rather than turf, to w4iich courts New Zealanders are not accustomed. New Zealanders in some' instances were off their game. Besides the singles and doubles events several New Zealanders also paired with Inter-State partners in the mixed doubles. Results : Mixed Doubles.—Poulton and Mrs. Docker beat Aitken and Miss Wellwood (New Zealand) 6—l, 6—2. Aitken was unable to reproduce his form of either the singles or doubles. Poulton smashed and served excellently, and was well supported, by Mrs. Docker. Miss Wellwood was unable to get going properly with Aitken. Carr and Miss Cox beat Hartgell and Miss Brewster (New Plymouth) 6—l, 6—3, with comparative ease. Hehderson and Miss MacFarlane (New Zealand) beat Mellor and Miss Sinclair 6—2, 6—3. Miss MacFarlane showed greatly improved form, driving beautifully and indulging in smashing successfully: Her backhand work and all-round play was first-class. In the ladles’ doubles Miss Curtis (New Zealand) and Mrs. Lascelles beat Mrs. Cooling and Miss Meaney 6—l, 6—o in -a onesided game. Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Nicholson beat Miss MacFarlane and Miss Payton (New Zealand) 6—l, 7—5. The winners were the steadier players and excelled in placing and allround play. Miss Wellwood (New Zealand) and Miss Smith beat Mrs. Green and Miss Brewster <New Plymouth) 7—5, 6—3. Miss Smith iK-ssesses a .peculiar underhand drive which bothered the losers. In a special ioubles match Mrs. Green and H.ir'gell beat Miss Rice and -Morris 4—6, 9--7 6—4. Miss Green excelled in sen as fail.?. throvrtng her full weight into her strokes. Men's special singles.—Aitken (New Zealand’ beat McCausland 6—l, B—6, d ; splaying co:fiderably improved form on the morning’s exhibition. In :lv Iles' singles championship Mrs. Fuller Miss Payton (New Zealand) 3—6, C—l ' - MisS Payton won the first set, but .i d short In ihe subsequent sessions, bein? matole to strike length.
