KAPONGA.

(From. Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the executive of the Kaponga and District Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday evening. Mr. P. W. Allen presided. The chairman explained that the reason for the meeting was a suggested change in the local mail service. It was proposed to cut out the first mail in the morning from Kaponga to Eltham. If the change takes place correspondence posted overnight would reach New Plymouth some time late in the afternoon, instead of, as at present, at about 10.30 a.m. It would mean practically the loss of a day. Various speakers considered that the proposed step would be decidedly of a retrograde nature, and finally it was unanimously resolved: That this chamber is opposed to any alteration in the present mail service between Kaponga and Eltham, and that a letter conveying this resolution be sent to the chief postmaster immediately. A letter was received from the Wellington Underwriters’ Association, stating that Kaponga was under the jurisdiction of Auckland. It was decided to write the Auckland Asociation, asking for a reduction in insurance rates. It was decided that the Eltham County be written to on the matter of bridging the Kapuni at the Palmer Road, pointing out that it had been stated that the Stratford County were in possession of their quota of the money for carrying out this very necessary work, and asking the Eltham County to take action. The opening ceremony in connection with the new power house is to take place on Wednesday, 3rd instant, at 1.30 p.m. Judging from the response to the numerous invitations issued, there will be a large crowd present to see Mr. Hawken, M.P., officially turn on the Kaupokonui to do its work. Added to the opening speeches, there will be demonstrations of electrically driven machinery to engage the interest s of those present. A big ladies’ committee will attend to the refreshment part of the programme at the Town Hall.
