M. Deschanel, formerly President of the French Republic, is seriously ill. Mr. G. C, Isaac, senior inspector of technical schools, is visiting New Plymouth ?tnd district. Mr. R. P. A resolution of sympathy with the Topless family in the death of Mr. C. Topless (of I renin) was passed at the annual meeting of the North Taranaki Hunt Club yesterday. A London cable states that Messrs. Fred. Scarr, AVallace Bruce, Roy Taylor and T. Steele, Adelaide Residents, gave Sir Keith Smith a quiet farewell luncheon. A London message says that the United Grand Lodge of Freemasons of England has appointed the Prince of Wales Senior Grand Warden and the Lord Chancellor Junior Grand Warden. The many friends of Mr. G. B. Cook, of Puniho, will be glad to know he is inaking satisfactory progress since his operation for appendicitis a few days ago. Colon el-Com ma nd ant C. W. Melville, C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., who is in charge of the Central Command, was in New Plymouth yesterday In the afternoon he presented the Weekly Press dial- , lenge Shield for rifle shooting to the Technical ■College team, the winners last year. Col. Melville proceeds to Wanganui from here, probably leaving to-day. Further advices from the United States report that Mr. Verbnigghen, conductor of the New South Wales orchestra, hae been offered the conductorship of the Minneapolis orchestra for ten weeks at £2OO per week. The board representing the guarantors aqd subscribers decided that, as the engagement would run into the 1922 season, Mr. Verbrugghen be called on to readjust the terms of his contract with the New South AA r ales Government deputation.
