THE RUGBY GAME. NEW ZEALAND UNION. ANNUAL MEETING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The annual meeting of delegates to tao New Zealand Rugby Union opened to-day. The president (Mr. J. McLeod) presided, and delegates from all parts of the Dominion were present. Considerable discussion was occasioned by i applications for tte formation . and affiliation ' of new minor unions in country districts. ■ These were the East Coast, embracing a • large portion of remote country in the North I Island, and the King Country, from Rua- ; pehu to the Thaimes Valley, including the i goldfields. The chairman said it was not adi visable to allow country union? in thickly populated areas to become too numerous In the North Island, for tte reason of its dom- ! ination over the South Island. He considered the time had arrived for a new scheme. [ Other delegates advocated defined boundi ariee and lessened powers, but eventually the applications were approved without qualification. Moving the adoption of the report, the chairman said he desired all secondary schools to take part in the Moascar Cup competition. He suggested international visits should take place every five years. Referring to universal control of the game, he said the meeting would consider representation of the British Empire. Assurances made to the English Union that there was no fear of amateurism drifting Into professionalism in New Zealand had made a good impression. He hoped the tax imposed by the Government on the game would be temporary. Referring to tte fact that sectarianism was creeping into the code of school games, he recommended a firm stand, and suggested penalising any union that allowed a school to be debarred from taking part, in school competitions.
A Canterbury remit suggested that in futI ure in all New Zealand selection committees each island should have equal representai tion. i A remit from Hawke’s Bay criticising the present method of the selection of represen- ' tative teams was defeated In favour of a motion ‘‘that it be a recommendation to the management committee ttat surplus players from the teams picked for the A and B teams in the North-South Island match play a curtain-raiser on the day of the match.” There was a lengthy discussion regarding the amended rules of play. A motion was moved by the Wellington Rugby Union, ‘‘That permission to play under the amended rules be not granted to any union.” It was contended that if the amended rule was adopted It should be made operative universally over Dominions. The motion was carried after some amendments were defeated, the words “in 1923” to be added. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. H. Geddes (Southland) ; treasurer, Mr. E. Wylie (Poverty Bay) : auditor, Mr. O. Kember (Wellington) ; management committee, Messrs. G. W. Slade (Taranaki), E. Little (N«4son), S. S. Dean (Auckland). A. C. Kitts (North Auckland), G. A. Howe (Canterbury), W. S. Glenn, M.P. (Wanganui), A. J. Griffith (Wellington) ; referee’s appointment, Mr. Ward was nominated by the chairman and the referees’ appointment committee; trustees, Messrs. Slade and Howe. A motion that the appeal council should sit in Wellington’ was carried. The appeal council comprises: Messrs. G. H. Dixon (Wanganui), E. D. Hales (Wellington), G. C. Fache (Otago). The following appeal committee is to be located at Christchurch: Messrs. D. G. Garrard, J. F. Peake, G. F. Nelson, F. T. Evans, H. E. Hiddlestone. As the delegate to the English Union, Mr. C. J. Wray was elected, and a silver badge is to be voted to liim as a token of the union's esteem. J. Douglas (Otago) was unanimously reinstated.
FOOTBALL IN SCHOOLS. RUGBY OR LEAGUE GAME? Auckland, Last Night. A deputation from the Rugby League waited on the Hon. C. J. Parr requesting that school children or parents be allowed freedom of choice In regard to the football code they played. It was alleged teachers wera using their influence to prevent scholars playing the League game. Mr. Parr said the officers of the department would not take sides. He wanted to see children grow up healthy in body by playing clean sport. He suggested the League authorities should endeavor to convert teachers to the League game. The League had nothing to fear from the department as far as having a clear field was concerned, but he would inquire into the matter. TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW. TUKAPA CLUB. YESTERDAY’S MATCHES. In the central division competitions Stratford first juniors beat Midhirst by 10 points to 6, the game being played Stratford. The Stratford fourth grade team beat the Stratford Technical High School B team by 39 to nil. THE GAME AT URENUI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The supporters of the Urenui Football Club were well satisfied with the snowing of the latter against the strong Tukapa team opposed to them on Saturday last, and to be only beaten by three points' to nil was a most meritorious first attempt, whilst the club captain (Mr. D. Tate), is to be complimented upon the results of his efforts to get his men into form, and it- is safe to precHct chat when some of the younger players get a better knowledge of the finer points of the game they will hold their own witr- most of the teams in the competition. Urenui were without the services of G. N. Fuller, who was representing the Clifton seniors in their match against Wairaate. and although the Clifton selector was only exercising the privilege under which' his club granted the Urenui Club permission to enter the competition—that the former should be allowed to draw upon the latter for any players they might require—it is rather unfortunate for the prospects of Urenui that this should be the case, as with the experience and quail flcations which Fuller must undoubtedly possess to entitle him to a place in the Clifton seniors, his presence last Saturday in the Urenui team should have considerably enhanced their prospects of success. No doubt most players would scarcely care to play junior football if they are deemed good enough for the senior ranks, but it seems hard to realise how a newly-formed club like Urenui are to make a great deal of progress If, when any of their team show exceptional promise, they are liable to be transferred to the Clifton seniors. Prior to the commencement of play on Saturday last, the Urenui Club appointed Mr. D. Tate captain, and Mr. T. Taylor vice-cap-tain for the season.
