MATCHES AT KAPONGA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) In common with other places in Taranaki the first matches of the 1922 season were played on Saturday afternoon. The three local teams—juniors, thirds and fourths—all began well, each scoring a victory. The sen- ■ lore drew a bye. The fourths journeyed io , Manaia and defeated Watmate by 15 to 8. | At the first match, at 1.30, was | played between Oka Laws and the local thirds. Okaiawa arrived with only eleven men, but had the services of McGuire, a Kaponga j player. Shortly after play started Dick Wright was injured and had to retire for the remainder of the first spell. For a first game both teams showed good form, though the game was rendered rather one-sided owing to Okaiawa’s incomplete team. The first score for Kaponga was made by Stringer, who, after a clever dodgy run, scored between the posts. Shortly after play resumed Stringer sent the ball out from a scrum to Evans, who exhibited some good cucting-ln tactics. The local boys were marring otherwise good football by not running straight. A good rua by Pascoe gave the Okaiawa wing an opportunity to show a flrat-class tackle. On more than one occasion Ward, full-back for Okaiawa, saved his side by clean line kicking. Evans now put in a strong run, and succeeded in adding more points to the score, for he converted his own try. Bernard Hammersley, by fast folowing up, just missed scoring by overrunning the ball. A little later the same player sent the ball smartly from behind the scrum to Evans, who passed to Paul. The latter kicked high, and Stringer, following up fast, scored. Play had hardly resumed when Pascoe scored as the result of a good dribbling rush. On changing ends Ramsay, of Okaiawa, put in some good work, in which he was assisted by Taylor. Just on the call of time Evans made another good run, almost getting over, but was brought to grass by a splendid tackle by Reesby. Mr. Mick Lynsky refereed.

HAWERA v. KAPONGA JUNIORS. Kaponga won the toss. Hawera kicked off, playing downhill. A good line kick by N. Atkins (Hawera) relieved his side. A mark by Adams (Kaponga) gave Jenkins an opportunity of showing .-lean talcing of a high ball. Throughout the game Jenkins gave a splendid exhibition of full-back play, his taking and line kicking being almost faultless. Kaponga now pressed strongly, and Wills saved. From a free kick Wills missed an easy shot at goal. The first score was registered by Morland, who, after a good run, touched down at the corner flag. Shortly after this Wills made amends by potting a beautiful goal. Past following up by Scott and Brown almost resulted in a score, the ball being forced. Half-time found the teams about mid-field. On resuming Cain and Wills (Hawera) put in some good work, and the ball being missed by Guineas Hawera were unlucky not to score. A little later Kaponga also missed a splendid chance by off-side play. A good rush started by McGuire was stopped by Jenkins. The best piece of play of the afternoon was shown by Eddie Scott, who beat half the Hawera team with a strong swerving run, and passed to Doyle, who scored. Shortly afterwards Brown crossed Hawera's line, but was held, up, but Kaponga, thanks to a good kick by Kilpatrick, added three points to their score. The game ended with Kaponga pressing strongly In Hawera’s twenty-five, and the scores 9-4. Mr. Con. Crowley refereed. THE “SOCCER” GAME. TARANAKI ASSOCIATION.
