ALLEGED THEFT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, April 21. A whole family named Cronin, consisting of Samuel Cronin, his wife Mary, and his son George (aged 21), have been arrested on a charge of stealing £l6OO worth of goods from a dwelling occupied by Charles Simpson, who is a squatter. The Cronins are extensive property owners, and very wealthy.
TAXATION COMMISSION’S REPORT. Melbourne, April 21. The second report of the Taxation Commission recommends that -differentiation be made between incomes derived from personal exertion and those derived from property, with a discount of 15 per cent, allawed on the former. In the event of it being necessary to raise ine rate of taxation the report recommends the imposition of a tax on incomes derived from sources outside Australia. or a tax on the profits of sales abroad of exports from Australia.
COUNTRY WOMEN'S CONFERENCE. Sydney, April 22. The presence in the city of many women for the Show has been taken advantage of to hold a Country Women’s Conference, at which many schemes were discussed.
Resolutions were adopted for easing and bettering the conditions of women and children and providing better and cheaper means of communication, more educational, social and doestic conveniences and ausements out-back, also women’s representation in Parliaments. Suggestions were made for preventing the drift from the country. It was decided to form a Country Women’s Association. FLOUR MILLS CLOSE. Brisbane, April 22.
Barnes’ flour mills at Warwick hays closed, owing to inability to obtain wheat at a price to cover working expenses. Mr. Barnes stated that, though his firm was prepared to pay above the export rates, the Wheat Board preferred to export. The stoppage is a serious ,blow to the district. The mill has a gristing capacity of 'half a million bushels a year, and also possesses a storage capacity of 300,090 bushels, or one-tenth of the Queensland crop.
