SCULLING.
CASEY DEFEATS SHARPE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, April 22. Jack Casey (Australia) to-day defeated* Archie Sharpe (Wanganui) by four lengths in a race for £5O aside over the championship sculling course on the Wanganui river. A worse ay for such a contest could not have been chosen. The river was In high flood as the result of tire recent heavy, rains, and Jlie weather was cold and stormy. A strong wind blew down the course, and heavy rain showers fell at intervals. The scullers got away well together, the boats shooting ahead at a great rate. At the half mile, Sharpe was slightly ahead, ana at tto mile, which was covered in 4nnin. 15 sec., Casey was leading by a length. Casey, who made more of the current than Sharpe, was three lengths ahead at two miles, the time at this point being Bmln. 46sec.
From this onward there was a great struggle. Casey got well under the right bank, where the current was strongest, and Starpe out in the middle. The local man quickened up in the last quarter of a mile, but the Australian went on and won by four lengths, in the extraordinary tiime of fourteen minutes fifty seconds. Paddon and Hadfield followed the race.
Wanganui, Last Night. Just before the mile was reached in tbe sculling race Sharpe, who was slightly leading, struck timber, which interfered with him momentarily, and Casey later on touched timber, saying after the race that, he had injured his boat. Casey is a nephew of the late Harry Searle.
