Mr. T. M. Wilford, Leader of the Opposition, met a representative gathering of friends and supporters at Carterton on Tuesday night to lay the foundation for an effective Wairarapa organisation on behalf of the Opposition at the coming election.—Press Assn.
A young man, Jack Dix, who was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, appeared before Mr. H. R. Cattley, J.P., in the New Plymouth Court yesterday . morning charged with theft and committing an aggravated assault on a little girl. On the application of the police a remand till Saturday morning was granted.
The proposed tyre tax was referred to by Mr. T. McPhillips (chairman of the Waimate County Council) at Manaia yesterday, when he informed the Minister of Public Works that hifl council was opposed to the proposed tyre tax. They were not against the imposition of the tax, providing it was handed back as subsidies to the counties in which it was collected, the Government to see that it was judiciously [spent in improving the roads and giving access to the railway, and not, as some counties might use it, in lowering the rates. His council, which had put ita roads in order, was strongly opposed to being penalised by a tax which would be given to other counties to put on main arterial roads of which they would receive no benefit.
