Mr. R. 0. C. Marks, M.A., late of the Hamilton High School, has joined the staff of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School.

The names of Misses Kathleen Thomson (Awakino) and Delina M. Poletti (Bell Block) have been added to the probationers’ list at the New Plymouth Hospital.

Mr. John Prouse, of Wellington, Ne’W Zealand’s veteran base aoknet, Itas undertaken an engagement to sing in the forthcoming production of the oratorio “Judas Maccabeus” in New Plymouth. Mr. George Loveday, chairman of tha Ohura Railway League, baa been ap< pointed the Ohura district representative on the council of the Terana’ i Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Hughson, of Rahotu, who have been away during the last two months in the North Auckland and Waikato districts, returned to Taranaki by the mail train last night. The Sydney University Senate ha 4 appointed Mr. Arthur Lindsay Sadler to t‘he Chair of Oriental -Studies in succession to the late Profeeaor Murdoch. Mr. Sadler is at present lecturer at Leers College, Tokio.

Dr. J. H. Shaw, eon of Mr. Stanley Shaw, who, for the poet twelve months has been on the resident staff of the Melbourne Hospital, arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train on Tuesday evening on a short visit to his parents. Dr. Shaw leaves for Sydney early next week, where he will join the Kumara aa ship’s surgeon, and from there will proceed to London for poet-graduate study. Mr. M. Fraser was yesterday reelected to the position of chairman of the Taranaki Hospital Board for a further term of two years. Members of the board all spoke in appreciative terms of Mr. Fraser’s good work ast chairman. Mr. Fraser, in returning thanks, mentioned that he did not intend to stand at the next election for the Taranaki Hospital Board. Mr. Gilmour asked Mr. Fraser to re-eonsider his decision to retire, and said the board and the ratepayers were unanimous in the desire that he should continue, more particularly in order to give a lead ity securing a maternity home in New Plymouth in connection with thd hospital.

It is with the deepest regret that T have to record the death of Mr. Thomas Duffy, which took place at the Manaia Private Hospital on Tuesday morning (writes the Star’s Manaia correspondent). The young man was seriously injured in a collision on the night of April 8 on the Opunake Road, wbidi proved fatal. The deceased was ai sterling and popular young man, and a favorite with all who knew him. Ha was of a very kind disposition. He was one of the leading players in the first fifteen of the Opunake Football Club, and had played in the winning team in the seven-a-side tournament at the Manaia Hibernian Sports on the day of his accident. He also pMyed for the PHiama bowlers, and was a member of the club. His early death at the age of 22 years is very deeply; regretted.
