ahnst to meet champion. A RACE ARRANGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. A cable was received from Dick Arnst to-day stating that he insisted upon rowing Paddon for the world’s championship in accordance with his challenge to the winner of the HadfieldPaddon race. Later in the afternoon Mr. George Seifert, Paddon’s principal backer, covered Arnst’s deposit of £lOO, thus binding a race between tne two. Paddy Hannan recently challenged Paddon for the world’s championship, provided it was rowed in New Zealand. Paddon says he is willing to row Hannan in a private race for £5OO, but the championship must not be involved. “If Hannan wants the blue ribband he must come to the Richmond River and row for it,” he said. STAKES TO THE CHAMPION. CEREMONY AT WANGANUI. Wanganui, Last Night. Paddon had an enthusiastic reception at the ceremony of paying over the stakes to-night. He and his party made very appreciative references to the treatment extended them by Wanganui people. The chairman of Hadfield’s committee said they were quite satisfied with their man, and would be behind him when the time came again. One member added that they would go to Australia in an endeavor to regain the title. Hadfield, who also had a fine reception, said he was glad to have Deen beaten by a man of Paddon’s stamp. He did hot want to hold the championship while there was a better man. Paddon had been side-stepped already, and had not been given the chance he should have had. The speaker had been fairly nd squarely beaten and had no excuses to make, except that he thought he should have done better. William Webb, ex-champion of the world, who acted as umpire, said Hadfield rowed gamely, though at a mile and a half he did not seem to be rowing as he should. Every sculler had off and on days. Paddon hoped Hadfield would go to Australia after the championship.
