WAITARA.
BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday last. Present: The Mayor and Crs. Rennie, Jaggs, Johnston, Jopes, Johns, Ogle and Blair. The Bank of New Zealand wrote in regard to last session’s Act relative to the overdraft. It was resolved that the old liability be paid off in seven equal instalments, the first to be made by way of a special rate. The Health Department's inspector wrote in reference to the pollution of the stream which forms the source of water supply to the borough, by the refuse of the bacon factory at Inglewood. It was resolved that the health inspector be called .upon to take action. The Fire Board wrote in respect to the cutting off of water pressure whilst cleaning operations are periodically in hand at the intake, it being considered a danger in case of fire. A discussion ensued on the advisability of erecting a second settling tank, and it was resolved to obtain details and cost, of the work. The request of the Tennis Club to connect up with the main in Brown Street for their new courts on the Camp Reserve was granted. Mr. S. Topless’ request for the supply of water for pelton wheel power could not be granted. The council, in committee, dealt with a claim from W. McKenzie, on account of an accident he had met with whilst in the council’s employ. On resuming the following resolution was confirmed: That Mr. McKenzie be informed that the employees are insured against accident, and if he has a legal claim the council will see that it is forwarded to the insurance company. In connection with the wages account of the electric staff, it was resolved that same shall not exceed £46 per month, and that re-arrangement of same be left in the lighting committee’s hands. A request for a light outside the Clifton Hall was granted. Mr. J. Dring applied for a culvert to his property.—Left in the hands of the works committee.
The borough overseer reported on a defective water main across the Waiongona bridge, and advised tarring.—Or. Johns undertook to interview the Spiral' Pipe Company during his visit to Wanganui. The Mayor reported that he had given the borough foreman power to erect a turnstile at the Stafford Street entrance to the Camp Reserve.—Confirmed. Permission was granted the Easter Monday Sports Club to use the reserve on that day. GENERAL ITEMS. At the last parade of the Waitara Senior Cadets medals for shooting were presented by the Rev. G. H. Gavin as follows: Sergeant Allen, gold medal and marksman’s badge; Cadet, Purdie, silver medal and marksman's badge. The runners-up were Cadets Petersen and Richards, the lastnamed having shot extremely well for his age. The padre takes a great interest in the welfare of the cadets, and attends every drill night to give a short address on various subjects, which are much appreciated. The sale of artificial French poppies is to be inaugurated next week, part of the proceeds being rem&hpd to the widows, and children of Northern France, and the remainder rerained by the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association. The Soldiers’ Memorial Committee appointed last year will shortly make a move in connection with the scheme already decided upon. The filling in of Broadway to enable the tree-planting to take place will be the first step, and at a later date the whole scheme—the new entrance to the domain from Broadway—will be proceeded with. It is intended to erect a cross of remembrance, with marble slab containing the names of 30 soldiers who fell in. the great war. PERSONAL. Mr. W. J. C. Bakewell, of Rongotea, is to succeed Mr. A. H. Hawkins as manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Waitara. Conrad Vaughan, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan, of Waitara, was married to Miss Sangster, eldest daughter of George Sangster, at the bride’s mother’s residence at Stratford on Wednesday last.
