“OFFENSIVE TRADE”
’ CARPET-BEATING UNDER THE BAN. Carpet-beating has -been declared officially to be an “offensive trade.” This information is conveyed in an announcement just made on the authority of the Minister of Health, who fitates: It is hereby notified, .for general information, that His Excellency the GovernorGeneral has declared the following trade to be an offensive trade within the meaning of the Health Act, 1920: Carpet-beating. Th& Health Act provides that it shall not be lawful to establish any offensive trade within the district of any local authority except with the consent in writing of the local authority and of the local health officer. No person is permitted to carry on an offensive trade except in premises registered for the purpose. The penalty for a breach of the rule is a fine of £5 for each day on which the trade has been improperly conducted. Presumably the housewife who beats her own. carpets in her own backyard, or who directe her husband to do it for her, will not be regarded as being in the trade. But the new regulation is an indication that the Health Department has its official eye upon her.
