HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. A CLOSE MATCH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christcburcli, Last Night. At the King Edward Barracks last night over 250 V people watched a fight between Briaaj McLeary (Christchurch), 11.13, ex-amataar' champion, and Cyril Whittaker, 12.7 (Wei-, lington), for the heavyweight professional boxing championship of New Zealand and a purws lof £l7O. The contest went the full fifteen rounds, and McLeary was declared the winner on points? It was a remarkably clean flglit, each man showing the highest sportsmanlike tactlts. McLeary did must of the leading, and was certainly the better man. He used his powerful left with great effect. In the Last few rounds Whittaker made repeated unsuccessful efforts to get a knock-out with an ugly-looking right uppercut. MATCHES IN AUSTRALIA Received April IC, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, April 15. At the Stadium there was a bumper house to witness a contest between Godfrey and Sparge for the lightweight championship of Australia, and for the second time the pahfought a draw. The work of both throughout was smart, clean and snappy, with good footwork. Godfrey, on the whole, appeared to better advantage. In the fifth round he knocked Spargo doom, but the latter quickly recovered and showed improving form in the ciosfng rounds. Received April 18, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, April 15. In the bantam championship Jimmy Semens (8.5%) beat Mike Flynn (8.5%) on a foul in the fourteenth round. The winner eaaßy led up to the foul, and downed his opponent five times.
