INTER ’VARSITY DEBATE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The debating contest for the Joy nt Challenge Scroll in connection with the inter-’varsity tournament was held last night. There was a large attendance. The debate was won by Canterbury College, which met Auckland in debate. Otago were considered better than Victoria College, whom they met in the contest. In announcing the decision placing Canterbury first, the judges said it was not very easy to come to a decision. The first decision was that Otago beat Victoria and that Canterbury beat Auckland, and finally it was agreed that Canterbury defeated Otago, though only by a very little. Proceedings during the debate were at times very rowdy. FIRE AT DUNEDIN. Dunedin, April 15. A fire at midnight seriously damaged Romison’s confectionery shop, in the centre of the city. Adjoining premises, occupied by Braithwaite’s and the Bible Depot, were threatened, but the brigade made a good save. Insurances are not available. BIBLE CLASS CAMP. Wellington, April 15. The Methodist men’s Bible Class centenary camp, assembled at Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt, on Thursday evening, with representatives 250 strong from Auckland to Invercargill. The Rev. Mr. Laws, president of the Centenary Conference, preached at Good Friday morning’s service, and the Rev. Mr. Lawry, centenary secretary, addressed a large gathering in the evening. THEFT TO BUY FOOD. Wairoa, April 15. In the small hours of Thursday Miss Foote’s residence was burglariously entered and a quantity of jewels and clothing taken. On Thursday evening a note was found on the lawn of Sergeant Wade’s residence stating that the stolen articles were concealed under a bridge, where four cross roads meet near the river. Searah was made, and the articles were found intact in the creek, with the exception of a small sum of money which the letter stated was kept to” buy food, having had “nothing to eat all day.” The police are making inquiries. DISTRICT FIRE BRIGADES. Dannevirke, April 15. The eleventh annual conference of the United District Fire Brigades’ Association was held to-day, Superintendent A. E. Freeman (tylasterton) presiding. The delegates were accorded a civic reception, addresses being given by Councillor W. Dobson, in the absence of the Mayor and Mr. MNichol. M.P. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows:—President, Superintendent Pickering (Napier); vice-presi-dents, Deputy-Superintendent Braggins (Masterton), Fireman C. Braggin-s (Dannevirke), Superintendent Burlace (Woodville), and Fireman Burrow (Spit); treasurer, Fireman Stubbs (Hastings) ; secretary, Deputy-Superin-tendent Henderson (Hastings). The annual demonstration commences . this afternoon.
