OBITUARY.
MRS. IDA S. CARTHEW. A PIONEER SETTLER. The death of another of the old Taranaki settlers, Mrs. Ida S. Carthew, at the age of 77 years, took place at New Plymouth on .Saturday. The late Mrs. Carthew arrived, in New Plymouth on February 7, 1850 (being then a girl of about 6 years) with her parents, Mr. efrid Mrs. George Curtis, her brother George and her sister Helen, the family being passengers in the ship Pekin, from London, under the command of Captain Whitby. Others to arrive in New Zealand by the same vessel were Mr. and Mrs. J. Stephenson Smith and family, Mr. Charles and Miss Mary Hursthouse, and Miss Hannah Francis (afterwards Mrs. S. Fishleigh). Messrs. Curtis and Smith had left the vessel at Wellington and proceeded overland to New Plymouth to' make arrangements for the accommodation of their families. As soon as a raupo house could be erected the Curtis family settled at Omata. For the first six years Mr. George Curtis, senr., carried on farming operations, and was also senior partner in the firm of Curtis and Watt, wholesale merchants and Lloyds’ agents in New Plymouth. On February 21, 1864, Miss Curtis married Captain Edward Carthew, Cornish Rangers, and second eon of Admiral James Carthew. Captain Carthew was also commissioned to the same rank in the Taranaki military forces during the Maori war. He died on August 31, 1875.
Mrs. Carthew is survived b> the Following family: Mrs. J. H. Norris (Hamilton), Mrs. A. E. Ashcroft (Vernon, Canada), Mrs. William Meldrum, Mrs. E. W. M. Lysons (New Plymouth), and Messrs. Edward, Carthew (New Plymouth) and Francis Carthew (Hamilton).
The deceased, in company with many others, took refuge in Nelson in 1860-61 when the Natives were aggressive. She subsequently returned to New Plymouth, where she had resided ever since at Te Henui, enjoying good health until recently.
