TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.") The Easter racing carnival is now the chief topic in the sporting world, and commencing on Saturday there will be some sixteen racing and trotting meetings got off during the next week. Principal interest centres on the Auckland and Canterbury Easter gatherings, but a good number of Taranaki sports will attend either the Feilding ur Waimate Plains gatherings. Taranaki horses will be well spread out this Easter, Silver Link, Rational, Income, Danger Zone, Paddington Green, Active, Stork, Hipo, and Uncle Alex going to Ellerslie, while Marqueteur, Egmon-t Park, Skylight, Awake, Irapuks, Inah, Voluble, and a whole host of lesser lights will do the Feilding meeting. Judging by their recent form Rational, Marqueteur, Skylight, Awake and Voluble should pay ) their way during the Easter. The public sorted out winners at Awapuni with more success on Saturday than on the first day, amongst the winners being five first ■ and two second favorites. Racing was again interesting and finishes close. Tamatete w-n the Manawatu Stakes from end to end, beating a good field, and if required might have increased his winning distance materially. Thespian knocked himself out through pulling too hard, and Winning Hit did not find his feet smartly enough to have a chance, though had it been a mile he might have 'won. As anticipated, No Bother and Kilreid won their races comfortably, and both paid fairly good "prices.” Gold Cup form worked out well as regards Trespass, who appeared to be a trifle lucky to best Paoanui in the Longbum Handicap. Volo was backed down to "evens” in this event, but 9.8 anchored him in the straight, and he could only struggle home in fourth position. The opening event fell to Martulla, a daughter of Martian and Tortulla, who has been showing fair fonm recently. Jovial was a strong order in the Stonyhurst Welter, and came along and won nicely at the right end from Mustard Pot, who showed improved form. Rapine (Martian-Pineta) proved himself a game sort by cutting down Killashandra in the Nursery, after the latter looked like winning. Grotesque was backed for a ton of money in the concluding event, and at the finish won with something in hand from Birkie and Irapuka. The winning jockeys at the Manawatu meeting were as follow: Roy Reed (two wins), A. Dixon. R. Hunt, B. Wiggins. A. Reed, A. J. McFlynn, R. S. Bagby, C. Reed. S. Anderson, H. E. Ryder, W. Rennie, H. Goldfinch, M. McCarten, L. G. Morris, H. Were. Following were the principal winning owners at the Manawatu imeeting: W. A. Duncan £525, W. R. Kemball £520, A. B. Williams £455, B. L. Joll £455, F. Besley £450, T. O’Donnell £350. C. F. Vallanee £315, F. Penman £270, C. Kirkpatrick £270, It. T. Reid £250. C. Morse £250. P. F. Wail £2lO, Allan and Kirkpatrick £175, L. McKenzie £l7O, Collinson and Walker £155, G. M. Currie £l5O. J. McLaughlin £135. Sir George Clifford £125, T. H. Lowry £l2O, H. J. Eaves £lOO. Grotesque, Rational and Quest are a like-ly-looking trio in the A.R.C. Easter Handicap. Old Gold should run well in the Brighton Hurdles. The following should not have appeared for the Kawakawa Hurdles at Feilding: Te Toa, Mangawai. Silta, Misty Wave. Whizz Bang, and Lead On. Marqueteur, Trespass and Paoanui may be hard to separate in the Feilding Cup. The first-named should start favorite. Voluble and Awake read well in the Mangaone HanSALE OF TROTTING HORSES. The public are reminded of the great disposal sale of trotting horses to be held at Hawera on Saturday on behalf of Mr. J. R. Corrigan, whose stud will be offered for sale. This includes 11 brood mares and foals, 12 torsea in work, including some pramlnent in
the trotting arena, and numerous young stuff of good breeding. It is a good opportunity to purchase trotters of undoubted good breeding and likely prospects. The sale starts at 1.30, and takes Diane in the wipter show taulldir ♦
