DOMINION NEWS.

EDUCATIONAL MATTERS. ( REPLIES TO REMITS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Replying to remits forwarded by the New Zealand School Committees* Conference, the Minister of Education says it is impossible to find money for assembly halls, in view of the financial stringency, and that no proposal to increase the capitation for school committees can be entertained. He con-

siders reasonable the suggestion that teachers’ transfer expenses should be paid when the transfer is ordered. Arrangements have been made to pay the railway fares of pupils attending proficiency certificate examinations.

It is impossible at present for the Government to embark on any large scheme of science instruction and research.

The Minister thought it not unreasonable that the association should desire to be represented on the Council of Education, and he would consider the point when the Act dealing with its constitution is next before Parliament. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister for Education states that, as to teachers taking the oath of allegiance, so far there have been no refusals. In connection with the Schools Committees’ Association, the Minister for Education says he regrets it is impossible at the present time for the Education Department to undertake the expense of providing free medical treatment to school children. The most that can be done in the meantime is to advise parents what medical treatment is necessary.
